In NSW you must have a general boat licence to drive any vessel over a speed of 10kts (18.52km/h). That is to say that if you intend to drive a vessel at a speed that will allow the vessel to plane, you need a general boat licence.
In NSW you must have a PWC licence to drive a PWC at any speed. A PWC licence is an upgraded licence from a general boat/marine licence. It requires an additional PWC Safety Course and an additional PWC licence test.
You will need to bring identification. Young adults will need their parent or guardian to attend the training session with their ID as well as giving their consent. Click here to see the current Transport for NSW identification documents: Accepted Identification Documents
Your course includes instructor-led theory in class and practical boating training on the water. Your booking confirmation will show your start time and course schedule. Practical sessions may run in separate groups because boat seats are limited; we will confirm your allocated time.
After the course, you receive 30 days’ access to our online theory presentation and practice questions for revision. The official knowledge test is completed separately at Service NSW, when you feel prepared. Book ahead and allow time for the test and licence application.
Our current course provides theory preparation and practical boating training; the official knowledge test is completed through Service NSW.
This gives you time to learn, practise and ask questions before taking the test. You can use your 30 days of online revision access and book the test when you feel prepared, rather than needing to sit it at the end of your training day.
We understand that a separate appointment takes some organising. The benefit is time to revise, help with your questions after training and a lower course price.
With the required documents ready, you can sit your test and apply for your licence during the same Service NSW visit, subject to passing and meeting the application requirements. Book ahead and confirm what you need to bring.
Service NSW test and licence fees are additional, so include these when comparing total costs.
You receive 30 days’ access to our online theory presentation and practice questions for revision after your course. Practise until your results are consistently strong and you understand the reasons behind the answers.
If something is unclear, contact Greg for help before your test. We also guide you through the next steps for attending Service NSW, including booking your test and checking the paperwork you need to bring.
Our aim is to help you arrive prepared and confident. Your official test result and licence approval remain subject to Service NSW requirements.
Unfortunately no, however there is a cafe and IGA within the complex and complimentary tea and coffee is available in the training room. Please feel free to bring snacks and/or drinks as it is often a big day for most students.
Separate and regularly cleaned male and female toilets are available at the seminar venue, but no toilet facilities are available during the practical component.
The official General Boat Licence knowledge test is completed at Service NSW and consists of 50 multiple-choice questions. In Section A you must answer at least 24 of 30 correctly. In Section B you must answer all 20 correctly.
Our course prepares you through instructor-led theory, practical boating training and 30 days of online revision access with practice questions. Book your official test when you feel prepared; a pass is not guaranteed.
The official PWC knowledge test is completed at Service NSW and consists of 15 multiple-choice questions. You must answer at least 12 correctly to pass. You must already hold a General Boat Driving Licence before taking the PWC test.
Our Boat and PWC course provides preparation for both tests. Official testing and licence fees are separate from the MBL course fee.
If you do not pass the official test, you will need to arrange another attempt through Service NSW. A test fee applies to each attempt; ask Service NSW about resit arrangements.
Use your 30-day online revision access and practice questions to review any areas you found difficult. Contact Greg for help with anything you do not understand before your next attempt. MBL does not conduct official tests or resits.
Your MBL course completes your training, not the official knowledge test or licence application. You receive practical boating documentation to take to Service NSW.
Book your official knowledge test at Service NSW when you feel prepared. With all required documents ready, you can sit the test and apply for your licence during the same visit, subject to passing and meeting the application requirements. Service NSW issues your licence.
Transport for NSW require that you complete practical on-board training before issuing you with your boat licence. We can provide this training. Alternatively, you may complete the Boat Driving Licence Practical Logbook (available on the day from us, or from Transport for NSW). The logbook must be completed with a licenced skipper over 18 years of age, who has held their licence for a minimum of three years, on a registered vessel fitted with all required safety equipment.
You may choose to complete the practical requirements with us on the day of your course. Otherwise, simply complete the activities in the Boat Driving Licence Practical Logbook with someone who is over 18 years of age, has held their boat licence for at least three years over the course of three trips. The trips can be conducted on the same day and can be of any length of time. The logbook is not hours based so your trip may have taken a minute, an hour or the whole day. Bear in mind that Transport for NSW can and do conduct random audits on the logbooks to ensure their integrity. Click here for a PDF logbook: Logbook
Yes. Service NSW knowledge-test and licence fees are additional to your MBL course fee. Licence fees depend on the licence type, duration and any applicable concession.
Include the separate test fee when comparing the total cost of courses. Check current government fees with Service NSW before your appointment.
A junior (less than 16 yrs of age)/restricted licence is available for persons aged between 12 to 16 years. The junior/restricted licence is a restricted licence but among other privileges, it does allow the licence holder to act as an observer when you are involved in towing activities such as wakeboarding, water skiing and the like.
You can obtain a NSW Safe Boating Handbook or Personal Watercraft Handbook from any Service NSW office. Alternatively, click here for an electronic copy:
It is highly recommended that you have completed the Transport for NSW example questions to a competent level prior to attending training.
The general boat licence knowledge test consists of 50 multiple choice questions. In the first section you must answer 24 out of 30 questions correctly. Yes you can. A boat licence is like a car licence in that it is recognised in other States and Territories in Australia. If you intend on staying in that State or Territory for more than 3 months, you will need to swap your existing licence to the corresponding State’s licence.
You must hold a General Boat Driving Licence before taking the official PWC knowledge test. Our Boat and PWC course prepares you for both licences through theory instruction and the boat practical component.
The official tests and licence applications are completed separately through Service NSW. If you already hold a boat licence, contact us about PWC theory preparation. PWC licensing does not require a practical logbook.
No. You must hold a Boat licence before you drive a PWC in NSW and/or Vic. If you are caught driving a PWC without a licence you WILL be fined. The fine is currently $500 in NSW.
