How to Get a NSW Boat Licence in 2026

Getting a NSW general boat driving licence involves three main tasks: learning the boating rules, obtaining acceptable practical boating experience and passing the official knowledge test. The process is manageable when you complete each step in the right order and arrive at Service NSW with the correct evidence.

When is a boat licence required?

A NSW general boat driving licence is required when operating a recreational powered vessel at 10 knots (about 18.5 km/h) or more on NSW waters. Applicants must be at least 12 years old. Special restrictions apply to licence holders under 16.

Step 1: Learn the theory

Begin with the NSW Boating Handbook and structured theory preparation. You need to understand navigation marks, collision avoidance, safe speed, lifejackets, required safety equipment, alcohol limits, towing, emergency procedures and the operator’s responsibilities.

Step 2: Obtain practical experience

For a general boat licence, you must provide acceptable evidence of practical boating experience. NSW currently provides two official pathways: complete the practical logbook with an eligible experienced skipper, or complete approved training with an Authorised Training Provider.

For the logbook pathway, at least three trips must be completed in a powered vessel under power, with the prescribed safety equipment, at no more than 10 knots and in the company of an eligible skipper. The practical experience must be within 12 months of the licence application.

Step 3: Book and pass the knowledge test

Book the general boat licence knowledge test at a Service NSW Centre. The test contains 50 multiple-choice questions. You must answer at least 24 of 30 questions correctly in Section A and all 20 questions correctly in Section B.

Step 4: Apply at Service NSW

Bring proof of identity, evidence of practical experience, evidence that you passed the knowledge test, any required health or eyesight evidence, payment and a concession card if applicable. If you are under 16, a parent or legal guardian must attend and provide identification.

Once all requirements are accepted and the fee is paid, the licence can be made available digitally through the Service NSW app. Licence periods of 1, 3, 5 or 10 years are available.
